Sri Lankan Leopard

       The Sri Lankan leopard is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. It was first described in 1956 by Sri Lankan zoologist Peules Edward Pieries Deraniyagala. Its' kingdom is Animalia and Class is Mammalia. Their family is Felidae. Then their trinomial name is Panthera Pardus Kotiya . 

          Since 2020 the Sri Lankan leopard has been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, as the population is estimated at less than 800 mature individuals, and is probably declining.

                 Sri Lankan leopard has a tawny or rusty yellow coat with dark spots. There are  Sri Lankan leopard of different weight and they have long tail. The melanistic leopards are rare. In October 2019 the Department of Wildlife Conservation found that Sri Lankan leopards' life range is from 12 to 15 years in the wild and up to 22 years in captivity.

             The Sri Lankan leopard have been seen in forest patches, tea estates, grasslands and pine. They are solitary hunter and they hunt by silently. Then they can run very fast. Sri Lankan leopards are more active and prefer hunting at night. They  hunt  small mammals, reptiles, deer as well as larger animals. 

             The Sri Lankan leopards are in trouble. They are killed by people. People have set wire snares for hunting leopards. So they are rare. So We protect leopards.
